Using the same image transfer techniques and painting that I use on my wall pieces, I am now creating 3D Sculptures called
"Torres" (Towers).
I'm using my own images of corrugated metal, architecture, photos of textures and of course "teletype tape" to populate the surfaces of these sculptures.
"Correlation" is my largest sculptural tower to date! Nearly 8' tall and covered in images of corrugation, teletype data and other graphics along with painting and drawing.

As a consummate explorer and space science fan I have followed and worked briefly both in the Air Force and for NASA. The Apollo moon missions dominated my youth and made great impact on my vision and hope for the future.
While exploring boxes of old stuff one day I stumbled upon my Saturn 5 rocket model. I immediately began photographing it and using it in my Rockets and Stuff series.

Growing up on books like, "S is for Space" and "R is for Rocket" and also working at NASA, I have a deep affection for all things to do with space exploration. The Apollo 11 astronauts returned from the moon on my birthday in 1969, what a present! This piece explores all these things.

Lagrange points are areas in space situated between two large bodies (Earth and moon for example) where a satellite can be placed and maintain position with minimal stationkeeping.
I was inspired to explore this series after hearing a lecture by Dr. John Mather on the James Webb Space Telescope that will be launched in 2018. It will be placed at a lagrange point which rests behind the moon.

" The L2 point lies on the line through the two large masses, beyond the smaller of the two. Here, the gravitational forces of the two large masses balance the centrifugal effect on a body at L2." This is the point where the James Webb Space Telescope will be positioned to look further back in time to find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, and to peer inside dust clouds where stars and planetary systems are forming today. My interpretation includes the classic Saturn V rocket which is a personal favorite.

“Digital Lake” uses the image of a Maine lake for the basis of moving, (using Japanese graphic inspiration) beyond the physical realm into the digital.
Intricate waves of emotion roll over us each day, unbidden and often turbulent. Calm waters and turmoil reach out to each other over a calm plain. The only way out is through the window.

During NASA’s Mercury project (1958-1963) teletype systems were used for mission critical communications between Goddard Space Flight Center and remote tracking stations and was comprised of over 100,000 miles of teletype lines!
These planetary pieces show actual punched holes (words in digital form) in teletype tape overlaying an abstract planetary body. So cool!

To create this digital artwork I’ve used a scanned teletype-tape image, set in motion and blended in Adobe After Effects. This is the same image I use for my physical artwork that I create on metal. It really is amazing that digital artwork can create an other-worldliness from a simple design when combined with itself and sounds.
I have always wanted to add motion, layers and sound to my 2D paintings and photography. After Effects has provided the tools that I need to take my designs, images and finished pieces to the next level. You can see my original 2D artwork at www.girardinifineart.com along with the digital images created from them.

To create this digital artwork I’ve used a photograph of ...wait for it.....the dirt on the side of my car after a rain! In the photo it looked like a forest scene. I added and set in motion the moon and the Sun and blended the "Forest" layers in Adobe After Effects. Look closely for the twinkling leaves....
Just playing with the TT images.
It really is amazing the other-worldness of a simple design when combined with itself and sounds.

I call these pieces “Image Sculptures” because even though I am using imagery to create them, the process is 3 dimensional. Each wall piece is built by working on aluminum and adding layer after layer of imagery and pigment.
These abstract combinations of imagery, painting and sculptural elements combine to create floating elements where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.

While creating this piece I tried to show the arial view of two things: A ramshackle house with a corrugated roof and exposed plaster and lathe walls connected by an interrupted diving board to a cool blue rectangular swimming pool. I believe that this speaks to how our priorities direct our focus and where we spend our money.

The Japanese dolls are a piece of emotional history for me. I spent time there, in Japan, as an exchange student. It was a pivotal moment in my personal history and has affected my artwork, my designs and many aspects of my life ever since. I also think that Geisha dolls show a cultural uniqueness that’s instantly recognizable. They have subtle non-verbal connections, tell a story and I believe add meaning to an otherwise abstract surface.
When I work with the figure, whether it’s a human or a human-doll, it inspires me by the impression of expression on the face. What does it seem to say? How does it affect us? What do we feel when we look into it’s eyes? By placing the figures among the parallel bands, I create a layered depth within the boundary of the piece. Generally I place them above a textured metal surface that’s simultaneously reflective and solid.
